Survey Says: RIP

It is a well documented fact that my husband and I are big dorks: dorks in love with kitsch. And there’s nothing kitschier than a 70s game show, right? Match Game was always our favorite. Gene, Brett, Charles, and Richard: The Awesome Foursome. This group MADE this game. Who cared that there were even contestants? It was the dynamic between this group of hilarious folks that was the reason people came back day after day to watch this show. And you know who was the best at Match Game? RICHARD FREAKING DAWSON. During the final round, he almost always picked the same answer as the contestant, unless that person was just a giant dummy.

It was for this reason that they gave the affable, confident, and super rad Richard Dawson Family Feud. There was just something special about him. He’d come into your living room, kissing all the ladies, making inappropriate jokes, and making people that gave idiotic answers feel like morons. It was greatness. Family Feud was a nightly ritual for me, and I loved every second of it. Even the Dallas vs. Dynasty episodes, when Richard had clearly lost some of his gusto, were still good.

And Family Feud has sucked since he left. And now, there will never be another good game show, ever. I’m convinced.

Didn’t you feel like you knew him? He was the Johnny Carson of game shows.

My hope is that Gene, Brett, Charles, and Richard are somewhere, together, smoking, drinking burbon, and making inappropriate jokes while waving goodbye to contestants as they turn to leave the stage. Survey says! We’ll miss you, Richard.
